Nail catalogs are full of names that sound interchangeable. Coil nails, common nails, wire nails, collated nails. If you are ordering for a factory, a pallet shop or a construction crew, mixing them up costs time and money. This article breaks down the real differences, so you order the right nail the first time.
We are Linyi Dabao hardware Products co., ltd, a nail factory in Linyi, Shandong. We make both coil nails and common nails from Q235 and Q195 wire, and we export them from Qingdao Port.
What Coil Nails Are
Coil nails are wire nails loaded into continuous coils, held together by wire or plastic. They feed into a pneumatic coil nail gun, dozens or hundreds at a time. They come in smooth, screw and ring shank, from 25 to 100mm, and the surface can be bright, EG, HDG or vinyl coated. The small head and the coil collation make them fast on production lines.
What Common Nails Are
Common nails are loose, individual wire nails with a flat head and a diamond point. They come in a bag or a box, and you drive them by hand with a hammer, or one at a time into a strip gun. They run from 1 to 6 inch, in Q195 and Q235 steel, with bright, EG and HDG finishes. They are the default fastener for general carpentry and packing work.
The Real Differences
The biggest difference is collation. Coil nails arrive joined in a coil, so a nail gun can fire hundreds without reloading. Common nails arrive loose, so every nail is handled by hand. That changes the speed of a job by a wide margin.
The second difference is shank options. Coil nails commonly come with ring or screw shank for extra grip, which matters on pallets, decks and frames that take a beating. Common nails are usually smooth shank, fine for general driving but not the best for heavy withdrawal resistance.
The third difference is head size. Coil nails use a small, often flush head for neat work and high-volume fastening. Common nails use a large flat head for general hold. Both are correct for their own job.
Which One Do You Need
Choose coil nails when you work with a pneumatic gun and need speed: pallet and crate assembly, decking, sheathing, framing lines, production floor work. The speed gain is where the money is.
Choose common nails when the job is hand nailing, low volume or general repair: boxes, fences, interior work, site repairs, hardware store retail. A box of common nails is the safer buy when you do not run a nail gun.
Ordering Direct from the Factory
When you order either type, confirm four things on the quotation: length range, shank type, finish and packing style. For coil nails, also confirm the collation angle and the nails per coil. Ask for samples first, check the head size and the feed smoothness, then place a trial order before booking a full container.
