A roof felt job goes wrong in six predictable ways. The felt tears around the nail, the nail rusts through the roof, the board splits, the nail backs out, the cap lets water in, or the box runs out halfway. Every one of them is a clout nail problem, not a bad roof. This article is the troubleshooting list we give buyers who keep coming back to us for clout nails, because the fix is usually a different head, a different length, or a different finish, not a different roofer.
We are Linyi Dabao hardware Products co., ltd, a nail factory in Linyi, Shandong. We make clout nails and roofing nails from 0.75 to 3 inch in EG and HDG finishes, and we will bring the full range to the Canton Fair this October.
Problem 1: The Felt Tears Around the Nail
Small heads pull through roofing felt the way a button pulls through a shirt. The fix is a big flat head clout nail. The wide head spreads the pressure across the felt instead of punching through it. If your crew is patching tears every other sheet, check the head diameter first, before you blame the felt.
Problem 2: The Nail Rusts Through the Roof
Bare steel nails on a damp roof rust within one wet season, and rust streaks stain the felt and deck. The fix is zinc. Our standard is EG galvanized clout nails for covered work and HDG hot dip galvanized clout nails for exposed roofs, coastal air and any roof that sees real weather. HDG zinc is thicker, and on a roof you only nail once, so buy the zinc the roof actually needs.
Problem 3: The Board Splits When You Nail
Driving a fat nail into thin timber splits the board and ruins the deck. The fix is a clout nail with the right shank gauge, a fine enough wire to push between the fibers instead of splitting them. Keep the head big and the shank slim, and thin boards stop cracking.
Problem 4: The Nail Backs Out of the Deck
On a roof that flexes in wind and heat, smooth shank nails work loose and lift the felt. The fix is grip. A ring shank clout nail carries rings that lock into the timber, so the cap stays down through thermal movement. For strong wind regions, ring shank is the safe default.
Problem 5: Water Gets In Around the Cap
A cup-shaped cap traps water and starts corrosion exactly where you do not want it. A flat, low-profile head sheds water and sits clean on the felt. Our clout nails use a flat big head profile, and combined with HDG zinc the fixing point stays dry.
Problem 6: The Box Runs Out Mid-Roof
Nothing slows a crew like running out of nails with half a roof left. The fix is buying right. Clout nails are packed by weight and count, and we quote the nails-per-box for your length so you order a full roof's worth in one go. Bulk boxes for roofing crews are standard here.
What to Check Before the Container
1. What is the head diameter, and will it hold felt without tearing?
2. What is the zinc thickness, EG or HDG, for your climate?
3. Can you mix lengths and finishes in one container?
4. How many nails per box, so my crew runs out at the end of the job, not the middle?
We answer all four the same day, and samples are ready to ship.
See the Range at the Canton Fair, Two Weeks Away
