When you order common nails from a factory, one of the first questions is the steel grade. Q195 and Q235 are the two grades most often quoted, and they sound almost the same on paper. In practice, they behave differently on the job. This article explains what each grade means, how they compare, and which one to order for your work.
We are Linyi Dabao hardware Products co., ltd, a nail factory in Linyi, Shandong. We draw both Q195 and Q235 wire and make common nails from 1 to 6 inch, in bright, EG and HDG finish, exported from Qingdao Port.
What Q195 Means
Q195 is a low carbon steel grade with a yield strength around 195 MPa. The wire is soft and ductile. It drives easily with a hammer, bends rather than snaps under a sideways load, and it is forgiving on hard blows. It is the classic material for general common nails, especially in lighter gauges and indoor or indoor-style work.
What Q235 Means
Q235 is a slightly stronger low carbon steel, yield strength around 235 MPa. The wire is a little stiffer and a little harder to bend. It holds shape under heavier loads, stands up better to vibration, and keeps a straight line when driven into dense timber. It is the choice for outdoor, structural and pallet-grade work.
The Real Differences
The first difference is hardness and driving feel. Q195 bends easily, which is good for forgiving hand nailing but bad when you need a nail to stay straight in heavy timber. Q235 drives harder but holds straighter.
The second difference is use case. Q195 is the budget-friendly choice for boxes, trim, general indoor carpentry and retail hardware. Q235 is the choice for pallets, fencing, outdoor framing and any job where the nail takes a beating.
The third difference is finish options. Both grades take bright, EG and HDG finishes well. HDG is the outdoor upgrade for either grade, but it is most often paired with Q235 on structural and outdoor orders.
Which Grade Should You Order
Choose Q195 when your work is light: boxes, interior trim, small joinery, hardware store retail, general hand nailing. It drives easy and costs a little less.
Choose Q235 when your work takes load: pallets and crates, fencing, outdoor timber, shed and barn work, export packing that must survive a long ocean trip. The small price difference per ton is worth the hold.
Ordering Direct from the Factory
When you ask for a quotation, tell the factory the grade, the length range, the finish and the packing. Ask for samples in both Q195 and Q235 if you are unsure, drive them side by side on your own timber, then place the trial order that matches the result.
Contact Linyi Dabao hardware Products co., ltd for samples, catalogs and quotations on Q195 and Q235 common nails. MOQ is 1 ton for trial orders, and we support OEM carton packing for your own brand.
