Common Nail Sizes Explained: BWG, Length and Diameter Made Simple

Every week we get the same question from buyers: what size common nail do I need? The honest answer is that most people buy by guesswork, and guesswork costs money. This guide is written from a common nails manufacturer in Linyi, Shandong. We make common nails, wire nails and iron nails every day, and here is how we tell buyers to pick the right size the first time.

Why the Size of a Common Nail Matters

A common nail that is too thin bends under load. A common nail that is too thick splits the wood. A nail that is too short does not hold, and one that is too long pokes through the other side. Size is not a detail. Size is the whole job. When you buy common nails in bulk, the difference between the right size and the wrong size shows up as failed pallets, rework and wasted labor.

The Two Numbers That Define a Common Nail

Every common nail is defined by two numbers: shank diameter and length.

Shank diameter runs from 1.6 mm to 5.2 mm, which is the BWG 6 to 16 range. BWG stands for Birmingham Wire Gauge, the standard used for wire nails around the world. The lower the BWG number, the thicker the wire. A BWG 16 nail is thin and light, good for trim and small boxes. A BWG 6 nail is thick and heavy, built for framing and heavy crates.

Length runs from 1 inch to 6 inches. Short nails fasten thin boards. Long nails tie together thick timber. In between, there is a size for almost every job in a woodworking shop or on a construction site.

How to Match Common Nail Sizes to the Job

This is the part that saves buyers real money, so read it once and keep it in mind.

For interior trim, furniture and light packing, use thin nails in the 1.6 mm to 2.5 mm range, about 1 to 2 inches long. They drive clean and leave a small hole.

For general woodworking, crates and pallet boards, use medium nails around 2.5 mm to 3.8 mm, roughly 1.5 to 3 inches long. This is the range most hardware stores sell the most of.

For framing, fencing and heavy construction, use thick nails from 3.8 mm up to 5.2 mm, usually 3 to 6 inches long. These carry real load and resist bending.

The rule is simple: the heavier the load, the thicker the shank and the longer the nail. If you stock the full 1.6 mm to 5.2 mm range, one order covers every job your customers will bring you.

Q195 and Q235: Two Steels for Two Jobs

Common nails are drawn from Q195 or Q235 low carbon steel wire. Q195 is softer and bends before it breaks, which makes it forgiving for indoor work. Q235 is stronger and holds better under weight, which is why buyers choose it for crating, framing and export packing. We supply both, and most of our customers keep both grades in stock for different jobs.

Three Finishes and Where Each One Lives

The finish decides how long a common nail lasts outdoors. Bright polished common nails are clean and bare, ideal for indoor work and the most economical choice. EG common nails, also called electro galvanized nails, carry a thin zinc coating that resists light moisture. HDG common nails, or hot dip galvanized nails, carry a thick zinc layer for outdoor timber, fencing and wet environments. We supply all three finishes, so you can offer your customers the full range instead of one option.

Buying Common Nails in Bulk: What to Ask

If you are buying common nails wholesale for a hardware store, an importer, or a large project, ask four questions before you order.

First, what wire grade is used, and is it written on the order? Second, what is the exact diameter range in BWG, and does it match your application? Third, what finish do you need, polished, EG or HDG? Fourth, can you get samples before the full production run?

A supplier who answers these four clearly is worth keeping. We also support custom lengths, custom packing in carton, gunny bag, inner box or inner bag, and OEM branding for distributors who sell under their own label.
