Ask a builder what holds a house together and they will not mention the common nail. It is too small, too cheap, too ordinary. But walk any jobsite and you will find boxes of them everywhere: bright polished common nails for indoor framing, EG common nails for general work, HDG common nails sitting outside in the rain.
This guide is written from the supplier side. We run a nail factory in Linyi, Shandong, and common nails, wire nails and iron nails are the backbone of our daily output. Here is what we tell buyers who call us for the first time.
What a Common Nail Actually Is
A common nail is a solid wire nail with a flat head, a straight shank and a sharp point, cut from low carbon steel wire. The name covers a whole family: polished common nail, EG common nail, HDG common nail, plus the round, wire and iron variants that buyers search under different names.
The dimensions are standard. Shank diameter runs from 1.6 mm to 5.2 mm, which is BWG 6 to 16. Length runs from 1 inch to 6 inches. A thin nail drives into picture frames; a thick, long nail ties together roof trusses. Most factories, including ours, stock the full range for one-size or full-set orders.
Q195 vs Q235: Two Steels, Two Jobs
Common nails are usually drawn from Q195 or Q235 low carbon steel wire. The two grades look almost identical, but they behave differently on the jobsite.
Q195 is softer. It bends before it breaks, which makes it forgiving when a nail hits a knot or a nail gun misfires. It is the usual choice for indoor work where the nail does not carry much load.
Q235 is a little harder and stronger. It drives straighter and holds better under weight, which is why buyers ask for it for crating, framing and export packing.
Honest advice: if you are not sure which grade you need, tell us what you are building and we will pick the one that fits. We supply both at the same price range.
Three Finishes: Bright, EG, HDG
The finish decides where a common nail can live. Most first-time buyers get this part wrong, so read it twice.
Bright polished nails are clean, silver and bare. They look good indoors, cost the least, and rust if you leave them outside. Use them for interior trim, furniture and dry indoor work.
EG (electro galvanized) nails carry a thin zinc coating. They resist light moisture and stay smooth. Most general construction, packing and framing runs on EG common nails and EG wire nails.
HDG (hot dip galvanized) nails get a thick zinc layer. They are rougher on the surface but they survive rain, humidity and coastal air. If the joint will get wet, choose HDG common nails and stop worrying.
We make all three finishes from the same wire, so you can mix bright polished, electro galvanized and hot dip galvanized nails in one order without changing anything else.
How a Common Nail Is Made
The process matters more than it looks. Coils of Q195 or Q235 wire are drawn down to the right diameter, cut to length, headed at one end and pointed at the other. Then the nails are tumbled, plated or dipped, and packed.
Consistency is the whole game. If the wire gauge varies by a fraction, the nail jams in the gun or splits the timber. Our factory checks diameter and hardness at every stage, and we reject batches that do not hit the spec. That is why a polished common nail from our line drives the same way every time.
Packing: Bulk, Box or Custom
Common nails ship the way buyers want them. We pack bulk in carton or gunny bag for volume orders, inner box packing for retail channels, and inner bag packing for small-quantity orders. If you need a special pack, we follow your request.
For importers, tell us your target market. European buyers usually want retail inner boxes; African and Middle Eastern buyers often prefer gunny bags with strong cartons. We adjust.
Where Common Nails Get Used
Everywhere, honestly. Building construction, woodworking, furniture making, pallets, crates, fences, farm sheds. A hardware store that stocks common nails in three finishes and a full range of lengths will sell through them steadily, which is why distributors order them by the container.
We ship from Qingdao Port, about two hours from our factory. Lead time is roughly two weeks after deposit, and we accept TT and LC.
Buying Common Nails in Bulk: What to Ask
If you are ordering by the ton, ask these four questions before you commit:
First, the exact steel grade. Q195 and Q235 are both common, and the price difference is small, so get it written on the order. Second, the plating thickness on EG and HDG nails. A thin zinc coat saves money on paper and costs you on the jobsite. Third, the packing per box and the box weight. Fourth, samples before production.
Any supplier that answers these four questions clearly is worth working with.
Finding a Supplier You Can Trust
Anyone can buy wire and cut nails. What separates a supplier is consistency, communication and honesty about specs. Ask for samples first, test the length and the plating, then compare prices on the same spec. If you are looking for a common nail supplier that answers these questions straight, samples are the quickest way to find out.
