Customers ask us the same questions every week: what length, what shank, what coating, and why the price is so different between suppliers. Wire coil nails look simple, but the details decide whether your line runs all day or stops every hour. This guide covers the points we check ourselves before a coil nail order leaves our factory.
A wire coil nail is a collated nail joined into coils by glue or wire, so a pneumatic coil nailer feeds them one after another without reloading. That collated format is why pallet plants standardize on them: one operator drives hundreds of nails and only stops to swap the coil.
Small head coil nails are the workhorse of the range. The low-profile head drives flush into the timber, so nothing sticks out to snag shrink wrap, scratch goods or hurt workers. Buyers often ask us about head height, and the honest answer is that flush seating is exactly what the small head design is for.
The difference is labor. Loose nails mean picking, positioning and driving one at a time. Collated nails arrive pre-arranged in coils, so the gun feeds them continuously. On a busy pallet line that can double output per operator. If you are still using loose nails for high-volume work, this is the cheapest upgrade you will make.
Two numbers matter. Nail length runs from 25 to 100 mm, covering pallet boards, crates and framing. Head diameter runs from 3.50 to 7.00 mm, giving you a choice between lighter and heavier seating.
For pallet production, most factories work with 50-70 mm nails for deck boards and 70-90 mm for stringers. If you stock the full 25-100mm range, you can quote almost any order without waiting for a special run.
Coil nails are drawn from Q235 low carbon steel wire. Q235 gives a good balance of strength and driving performance: hard enough to hold, soft enough not to split the timber. The wire diameter is controlled tightly, because a fraction of a millimetre off means jamming in the nailer and downtime on the line.
The shank decides holding power, and this is where buyers often under-order.
Smooth shank nails drive fastest and cost the least. They are fine for general crating where pull-out is not the main worry.
Screw shank nails have threads that turn into the wood as they drive. They resist pull-out much better, which is why screw shank wire coil nails and screw shank coil nails are used for heavy pallets and export crates.
Ring shank nails carry rings along the shank that lock into the wood fibers. Ring shank wire coil nails and ring shank coil nails are the choice for reusable pallets that get knocked around for years.
We supply all three shank types, so you can match the shank to the job instead of forcing one style on every order.
The coating decides feeding and corrosion resistance.
Vinyl coated coil nail options carry a thin vinyl layer that does two jobs: it grips the wood after driving, and it helps the nails slide smoothly through the gun. Vinyl coated wire coil nails are standard in high-speed pallet lines because smooth feeding means fewer stoppages. We make them in seven colors, yellow, blue, red, black, bright, gray and silver, so customers can color-code their production lines.
Polished wire coil nails are bare and bright; a plain polished coil nail does the same job for interior work. They look clean, cost a little less, and suit indoor work with no moisture.
Electro galvanized and hot dip galvanized coil nails add zinc protection for humid workshops, export packaging and outdoor timber.
Honestly, most of our pallet customers run vinyl dipped wire coil nails and vinyl dipped wire collated nails for feeding reliability. A plain vinyl dipped coil nail does the same job at a lower price point, and we keep a galvanized option for wet markets.
A protruding nail head is a real problem in shipping: it catches on shrink wrap, damages cartons, and scratches surfaces in transit. Small head coil nails sit flush, which keeps loads clean and inspection-friendly. If your customer complains about scratched goods, check the head profile first.
Four questions we think every buyer should ask before placing a bulk order.
What wire grade is used, and is it written on the order? What is the collation angle, and does it match my nailer? What is the head diameter, and does it suit my application? Can I get samples before production?
Any supplier who answers these four clearly is worth working with. We also make vinyl coated coil pallet nails, polished coil pallet nails, Jumbo Coil Nail sizes and custom colors, and polished wire collated nails are available for buyers who want a bright bare coil, with OEM service for importers and distributors.
